During a live Twitch, Alphonso Davies was not kind to Harry Maguire. The Bayern Munich defender can’t understand why the Englishman is Manchester United’s captain.
Some may see this as a lack of respect. But Alphonso Davies at least has the merit of not using the language of wood. During a live on his Twitch account, the defender of Bayern Munich made it clear in his own way what he thought of Harry Maguire. While playing the Ultimate Team mode of FIFA 22, the Canadian ran into the captain of Manchester United when opening a player pack. He then let loose in full live: “Guys, can you imagine, can you imagine… You are (Cristiano) Ronaldo, one of the greatest players of all time, of the 21st century. And your captain is Harry Maguire. He calls him ‘captain’. Give him (Ronaldo) the leadership. I’m not kidding Maguire, but Ronaldo should wear the armband.”
A very complicated period for Maguire
Since the start of the season, and even since his transfer from Leicester to Manchester United for more than 85 million euros in the summer of 2019, Maguire has not been spared criticism. While he had swept away doubts with the back of his hand during the last Euro, he is now in full doubt. He has a string of disappointing performances in a struggling team (only 7th in the Premier League after 30 days) and no one hesitates to fall on him across the Channel. In a recent survey, readers of Manchester Evening News even gave him the terrible score of 2.8/10 for his level displayed since the start of the season. However, he retains the confidence of his coach Ralf Rangnick, but also of his coach Gareth Southgate.
“I don’t think it even crossed our minds not to select Maguire,” the latter said at a press conference after announcing his list for the friendlies against Switzerland and Côte d’Ivoire at the end of March. “He was a key part of the starting XI which took us to the semi-finals of the World Cup and the final of the Euros. I know that at club he is going through a difficult period, but we have to see what are the best players within the core of the team and he is one of them. There is no doubt in my mind that he is one of our best centre-backs and the form, from that point of view, is something temporary thing,” insisted Southgate. This did not prevent the English public from whistling Maguire against Côte d’Ivoire.
The 29-year-old was once again able to count on the support of his coach and his teammates, including Jordan Henderson. “I can’t understand what happened at Wembley tonight, the Liverpool midfielder was indignant. Harry Maguire has been a colossus for England. Without him, the progress made in the last two tournaments wouldn’t have been possible. Getting booed in his stadium, for no reason? What have we become? What happened is not normal. As someone who wants to win with England, I feel lucky to share a locker room with him.”
