Kicker Chase McLaughlin re-signed – BrownsZone with Scott Petrak

General manager Andrew Berry continued working to improve the special teams Tuesday, and he probably isn’t done.

The Browns re-signed kicker Chase McLaughlin, but that doesn’t mean their search for kickers is over.

The Browns didn’t tender McLaughlin, who turns 26 on Saturday, as a restricted free agent last month but decided to bring him back. He kicked in 16 games last year, going 15-for-21 on field goals and 36-for-37 on extra points.

McLaughlin (6-foot, 180 pounds) got off to a perfect start, then faltered over his final 10 games, including missing a field goal in the 16-10 loss at Baltimore and another in the 16-14 home loss to the Raiders.

He made all four attempts from 50 yards or more, the third-most in franchise history, but was only 4-for-10 from 40-49 yards.

Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer said toward the end of the season he liked how McLaughlin did on kickoffs but wasn’t satisfied with the field goals.

“I thought we started the season great, and we have been a little inconsistent down the stretch,” Priefer said. “The only thing I can tell you is that I think he needs to keep his head down a little bit longer and follow through towards his target a little bit more.”

McLaughlin has made 75.5 percent of his field goal attempts (37 of 49) and 97.1 percent of his extra points (67 of 69) in the NFL. He was originally signed by the Bills in 2019 as an undrafted free agent and bounced among five teams for two seasons before sticking with the Browns last year.

The Browns have inexperienced Chris Blewitt on the roster – he was signed to the practice squad Dec. 29 and to a futures contract after the season – but could add competition for McLaughlin through free agency or the draft.

Berry already upgraded at punter and kick returner, signing Corey Bojorquez on Monday and Jakeem Grant last month.

Browns sign punter Corey Bojorquez

Bojorquez led the league in gross punting average in 2020 at 50.8 yards, which ranks fourth in NFL history. He also has the longest punt in the league each of the last two years, 72 yards in 2020 and 82 in 2021.

Bojorquez, 25, was traded to the Packers from the Rams before last season. He punted 53 times with a 46.5-yard average, the highest in Green Bay history and 14th in the NFL last season. His net was 40.0.

Grant was signed to a three-year deal worth up to $ 13.8 million at the start of a free agency. Grant (5-7, 171) made the Pro Bowl in 2021 as a returner. He averaged 11.9 yards on 26 punt returns, including a 97-yard touchdown, and averaged 23.4 yards on 23 kickoff returns. For his six-year career, he has four touchdowns on punt returns and two on kickoff returns.
