Through the NHL: News from Xavier Bourgault, Nathan MacKinnon, Petr Mrazek and Alex Ovechkin

The Edmonton Oilers have signed Shawinigan Cataractes forward Xavier Bourgault to a three-year entry contract.

Bourgault was selected in the first round, 22nd overall, by the Oilers in the 2021 draft. He has played 31 games with the Cataractes so far this season, recording 26 goals and 25 assists.

Bourgault was also part of the Canadian team at the World Junior Championships last December. He should have the opportunity to represent the maple leaf again this summer, in Alberta.

MacKinnon back tonight?

Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar is optimistic about center Nathan MacKinnon’s chances of playing Thursday night against the San Jose Sharks.

Bednar said in the morning that MacKinnon plans to be in the roster after missing Tuesday’s game against the Calgary Flames with an upper-body injury.

By winning in Calgary, the Avalanche became the first NHL team to reach 100 points.

The 26-year-old MacKinnon has 22 goals and 48 assists in 51 games this season.

Long absence in sight for Mrazek

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Thursday that goaltender Petr Mrazek will miss a minimum of six weeks of action.

Mrazek suffered a groin injury against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, his third of the season to that specific area of his body.

Mrazek was coming off two quality performances in back-to-back wins over the New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers. Shortly before, his name had been put on waivers, after a series of poor performances, without being claimed.

Mrazek is completing the first season of a three-year contract, signed last summer as a free agent.

The Leafs will send rookie goaltender Erik Källgren in goal tonight against the Winnipeg Jets.

Källgren took over from Mrazek in the 6-4 win over the Bruins. This will be the Swedish goalkeeper’s fourth departure with the Toronto team.

So far, he has a 2.64 goals-against average and a 91.1% save percentage.

The team’s No. 1 goalkeeper, Jack Campbell, is still not ready to return to the game. It is therefore Michael Hutchinson, who has been recalled urgently, who will be Källgren’s reserve tonight.

Ovechkin absent in training

Washington Capitals star winger Alex Ovechkin was absent from his team’s practice on Thursday.

Head coach Peter Laviolette said the No. 8 was given time off to seek treatment.

Since facing the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday, the Caps have had two days off. They will play again on Sunday against the Minnesota Wild.

Ovechkin, 36, has 42 goals and 36 assists for 78 points in 66 games so far this season.
