On Saturday April 23, 2022, Place du Capitole will be entirely dedicated to disabled sports. A wide space of 3200 m2 in the heart of Toulouse will host demonstrations, initiations, workshops, meetings with clubs and high-level athletes from the region, with or without disabilities.

Wheelchair basketball, rock climbing, boccia…

Led by the Comité Régional Handisport Occitanie (202 clubs and more than 2,700 members), these activities – which will in fact have started on Thursday 21 April with inter-company challenges and the next day with a “Challenge Handisport en fête” for schoolchildren of the region – will allow you to discover disciplines such as wheelchair basketball, sonic laser rifle shooting, boccia (which is a kind of game of bowls, similar to petanque), climbing, golf and many more others.

“The role of this 21st edition, like the previous ones, will be to promote and develop the practice of sport for people with physical or sensory disabilities, explains. There will be two main aspects to this event: we will welcome people with disabilities and direct them to local disabled clubs that may be of interest to them. Another section will allow able-bodied people – and more especially children, with numerous activities, gifts – to discover these handisport practices. »

Values to convey

These still little-known practices convey values of team spirit, surpassing oneself, accomplishment and their benefits are undeniable on the physical, cognitive and social levels. It is also a process of raising awareness of a problem that is always very difficult, and Caroline Mes underlines and deplores the financial complications due to the reduction in aid and the continual search for partners.

A European rugby champion and an Olympic medalist

However, smiles will be on their faces because it will be a joyful and optimistic day: many prestigious athletes will be present at Place du Capitole. Their recent successes are a wonderful showcase for disabled sports. Jonathan Hivernat, the captain of the wheelchair rugby team which became European champion on February 26, 2022 (and recent French champion with his club Stade Toulouse rugby disabled), will be there, as will the swimmer Ugo Didierthe track and field champion Dimitri Pavade or Cecile Hernandezthe French snowboarder, originally from the resort of Angles (Pyrenees-Orientales)who won the gold medal at the Beijing Paralympic Games in snowboard cross last March: everyone will be there, bringing hope and light.

They will be available and happy to discuss with the public, throughout this beautiful festive and sporting day.
